Volunteer Spotlights

Spotlight on Deb

Deb Derylak (she/her/hers) has been volunteering on a monthly basis with Tacoma Tool Library since September 2022 for over 80 hours! She volunteers as a Tool Librarian and a Tool Cataloger, helping members with tool loans and returns (“answering questions as best I can – I’m always learning something new from the Tool Fixer volunteers and staff!”) and helping to keep the tool inventory organized and easily accessible!

“As a librarian, I’ve always been inspired by libraries that enhance our collective sharing economy by including lendable items like cooking and crafting equipment, tools, musical instruments, telescopes, outdoor recreation equipment, and lots more,” says Deb. Deb currently works as the Senior Librarian at the Lakewood Branch for the Pierce County Library.

“As I’ve spent time at the Tool Library, I’ve come to appreciate how much of a community it is! Even the briefest interaction with a member who stops by for a pickup, return, or donation provides an opportunity to get to know my Tacoma neighbors. I often get to hear about the interesting projects people are working on; learn something new about our tools, our city, etc.; or make a new connection with another community organization.” – Deb

Deb grew up in Buffalo, NY and went to college in Rochester, NY.  Deb and her partner Jen moved to Tacoma in July 2016, when Jen accepted a position at Pacific Lutheran University. “Both Jen and I absolutely love how the city of Tacoma is a great city with a small town feel.  We live within walking distance of many of our close friends, and we often bump into friends and acquaintances whenever we’re out and about.”
